Mum 'n' Da were with us this weekend. This did not make for a particularly healthy one; but it did make for a forced hiatus from climbing, which i desperately needed. And daddy's taken to T-totalling, which i was terribly glad to find. It's very nice that they finally got to meet Soren. Seemed to get along pretty well--and Katja was all about Grandpa.
i've had some kind of carpal tunnel pain that's migrated up to my scaphoid. Not so motivating. Ah well: it has 'til tomorrow to be healed. i spent most of yesterday working on my new addition to the climbing wall family in my back yard. 'm building this inverted stair-case hangboard stack on the kids playground. Should allow me to move most of my big, bulky holds where i can use them without damaging my sternum, and free up the big wall for more movement-oriented training, which is what i built it for. That skull and the hangboards are so big they're hard to move past without thorax compression. Anyhow, i'll post up some pics when i finish the stack. Stay strong, Jungs.

Good company corrupts bad morale
Each tuesday i have a two hour lunch break, and each tuesday i start the morning out thinking to myself that i'll not climb, but will instead use the time wisely to do homework, etc. Each tuesday lunchtime rolls around and my studious resolve has been leached from my bones like calcium after a vinegar bath. Today was no exception.
And it's a good thing too, 'cuz i sent m' v5 project.
Crazy session, all told. Slept fairly poorly last night (which is becoming de rigeur with baby bagpipes reposing next bed over.) i'd failed at the send on sunday, and i was still feeling the pain, so i had very low expectations--so low, in fact, that i nearly did stay at school and study. But the warmup went ok, and i ran into a friend who's generally a stronger climber than i. He was having a subprime day and was working a v3. i jumped on and flashed. Then i got a pretty stiff v4 on 'bout the 4th try. i was feeling me oats, so we went upstairs and i sent the proj first go.
That made for a giddy, floating feeling.
So i went down to the freestanding boulder and hooked up with another friend who usually just makes me look bad. They were standing next to a new 4, and i asked 'im if he'd done it. Said he hadn't gotten the top bit worked out. So i laughingly told 'em to stand back so i could onsight the thing. Then i did.
The tendonitis in my left arm flared up like a fireworks display, but that was a good workout anyway. Mighty nice to have a solid, hard day of it after a really long dry spell. Now i'm gonna try to stay away 'til this weekend to heal. Peace.

Supert Weak
Finished midterms. (Hallelujah!) Still in school. Intense li'l week. i'm hardly ready for another week, but i'm glad to be done with that 'un.
Climbed yesterday. Wasn't gonna go in, but a friend asked me to teach her to lead, so i thought it'd be a nice easy day. Did end up doing some good toproping for a decent enduro sesh; then went up to the cave to boulder a bit. Put in a few burns on my project. i got the finish from the halfway point. i raced to the crux from the beginning--it's a bicycled heel hook to get to a li'l crimp match hanging inverted from the ceiling. i stuck it, but my heel didn't feel latched perfectly. i screamed my way to the finish, got one hand on, and my heel popped. One third of a second longer, and i would'a sent; but NO! Now i have to do it again. Ah well...it's a fun climb at least. But it does inspire me to lose a pound or two.
Also got the go-ahead to purchase a slice of plywood. i'm building a three-tiered hangboard wall. Got the idea from the gym, and it's a good one. Kind of an inverted staircase of hangboards/system holds. Also i'm gonna install a pullup bar. Then if i can score a set of gym rings for the birthday, i should have a right proper li'l workout setup. And this'll allow me to make my big wall into more of a campus/system wall like i'd originally intended. Now if i could just convince my lard-encumbered booty to go for a run, i might start shaping into a good climber.

Midterms
Midterms this week. This'll be the telling week, methinks: see if i've learned anything thus far.
i climbed pretty much all day yesterday. worked on m' wee wall at home for a long time, and played on it as i built. Then i went in for a fairly hard session at the climbgym. Good thing, really, 'cuz i don't expect this coming week's gonna readily lend itself to working out much.
Prayers please. It's going to be a furious one.

The Opportunity of a Lunchtime
Tuesdays turn out to lend themselves beautifully to a climb session o'er lunch. i get a two hour lunch, you see. For this reason, tuesdays do not lend themselves to not climbing--tendonitis be damned. i've climbed pretty much every other day for the last week; so it's a li'l bit surprising that yesterday's session went as well as it did. Didn't do much new stuff, but i did do a lot of stuff.
Didn't have any plans of working out when the day began. i really do have some raging tendonitis in the left biceps. The plan was to go move and do easy stuff, and basically not further damage myself, or otherwise chuck a wrench in the healing gears. i might not have accomplished that last bit so well, but i can say i didn't do anything particularly eyebrow-arching. "Easy" climbing notwithstanding, it was a high-volume day. Good workout.
Still have every intention of getting that iron workout in.

Being Lard
Right. i got the green light to have a long workout yesterday from La Jefe. i chose to climb. Did a protracted warmup. Stretched a bit. Contemplated some hard bouldering, and my left elbow benders erupted in a conflagration of inflammation. i climbed some stuff half-heartedly, but it hurt. i sat and moped a while. i bummed 600 of ibuprofen off the gym (i owe 'em a bottle). i moped more. i lay staring alternately at the ceiling and the inside of my eyelids. i was about to give up and leave, but i ran into a li'l group working a new v3. i watched them fall and fall and fall until i was interested. i sent their problem, and i felt better. i slunk into the cave, and sent a spooky sloper problem that'd spit me a few times on a stronger, less painful day. i think it'll probably go at hard v4. Then i got up another v4 i'd done before. Threw at a v5 several times, but didn't get it. i do think it'll go though. i'm gonna have to take a li'l time off to heal. This is irritating. i haven't worked hard enough to earn tendonitis.
Anyhow, i might be laying off of the puller/backwork this next iron workout; but there is still much to do. i've learned from digging through a cadaver that i might have muscles on the ventral portion of my body. i will try to find them and work them.

Squeaky Fed-Ex'd
Your Sleep Depriving Mouse done come fo' a visit. i've gotten me to bed long 'bout 12 for the last few nights to study, an Squeaky has a raw butt what's causing a superhuman decibel amplitude out'n his larynx.
No matter though: i clumb today anyway, four hours of sleep notwithstanding. i hurt ...i dunno, something in my arm--something that has henceforth constricted the radial nerve inexplicably and ferociously. This mattereth not also. i flashed a v5. Granted, it was the v-threeishest v5 i've yet been on; but the tape said v5, so i'm taking it. Haven't gotten in to the irongym this week. Having a baby has put a crimp in my available time, it turns out. But i think taking a single week off won't be the end of things. Oo, and i have had an epiphany for to turn m' wee Klettermauer into a mo' betta' gym. If any of you would like to donate some gym rings as, say, a present for the baby shower, you'd be contributing mightily to his future skill set and general manliness.

mundy
Yo tengo sueno.
Got in to the irongym for a bit this evening. In some ways it was encouraging, and in some kinda' depressing. i clicked off 25 pullups, which gives me great hope. Left off o' straight leg deads after 6x255 'cuz my nubbins were melting off the bar. i was bummed about that, but to be a half-full kinda' guy, it wasn't very hard on my back at all. To be half-empty again for a sec, i couldn't finish the last set of weighted leg raises. Ah well...i'm baby stepping back into shape. And overall i'm feeling pretty strong again.
Anatomy quiz tomorrow. Let's see if the baby comes and saves me from it. "i've got a golden tick-et..."

Baked
i thought about writing yesterday. And, for that matter, the day before. Only, i didn't.
i did a pretty hard workout at the irongym on monday. i actually ended up hurting a QL doing DB rows--just had to get that last rep up, and of course i lifted my low back to get 'er. Wasn't so bad as first i'd expected. Good workout. Eye opening how outta shape i've gotten, but it's starting to come back.
Yesterday (thurs.) i snuck in for a quick climbing workout. It was not good. i did snag a tricky v4 roof problem that'd theretofore eluded me, and got another new v3ish crimper; then i got fully shut down on a v3. Squirted off the crappy topout hold 9 or ten hundred times 'fore i called it a day.
So today i went back. Sent a string of 3s for a warmup, resent that 4 i got yesterday, resent the 3ish crimper (just to recreate the same burn level) then sent the problem first try. Then i got another new 4 second try. Dunno...better mood or something. Anyhow, i'll take it. Good workout.
It's definitely reminding me of how much lifting takes out o' me. Very hard to coordinate the two. Absolutely cannot climb as much when i lift hard. On the other hand, there's such a huge difference in my lock-off strength, and just what i can pull on when i lift. i'll cope with climbing only 2 or 3 days the week if it means i can start pulling 5s and 6s again.
School is getting brutal. Very soon (read: when the baby makes his entrance) i'll be mostly living at the school. Today we combed through three cadavers having a look at cervical and brachial plexus nerves, and the sympathetic chain ganglia. i'll be spending a whole lotta free time chatting with cadavers in the next several weeks. i'm really looking forward to diving in--i just wish li'l Soren would cross the threshold. Mayhaps tonight...
Saturday Addendum:
we didn't end up squeezing Soren out fri. night. Moreover, he didn't end up coming last night; although at 4:30 this morning Steph woke me up and said she was probably in labor. i popped up, took a shower, brushed the bones, dressed; we went back to sleep, and here we are with a still-pregnant woman. Man, i thought he was gunna pop out tha' chute! He's going to be a teenager soon, and we haven't even met yet...
Antecedent to that crazy action, i got a text from a friend and went climbing again--for a third day in a row. i mostly went in to chat with the guy; no real intention of climbing hard--let alone well. Started out falling off of nearly everything, but it worked out to be a very fine warmup. Then we ended up working a stiff v5. i didn't seriously think i could hang the first moves, but i thought What the heck...might as well play. we drew a crowd, and the peer-pressure had a near miraculous effect. i didn't send, but i did do all the moves. i'm pretty sure it'll go if i can get in fresh, and with my head on straight. Now i must do homework. Peace.

Wuss Factor: Code Fuchsia
Didn't hafta go into anatomy lab today 'til 1300, so i got a short climb sesh in. Good thing it was short, too. i sucked it UP in there. Pain tolerance was just cellar level. Everything hurt. No reflexes. No flexibility. The deadlifts on monday nearly made a paraplegic outta me. i think i'll try again tomorrow; see if i can sleep a li'l tonight, and rectify my wrongs.
On a brighter note, i just finished m' first week of school. So far i'm passing everything. Oh, and i just got my equipment order in with a shiny new Littmann Card 3. It's a new and, frankly, neat feeling to be able to hear things through a stethoscope, 'stead of just creating diastolics outta thin air 'cuz you're just so sure there should be one.
Baby had an ultrasound this morning. He looked perfect--all the metrics they score were right on target. Thank you guys for the prayers. Anyhow, i'm wasted. Real glad monday's a holiday. Peace.

Overdoin' it propa'
Climbed hard sun. Lifted yesterday. Climbed on break again today. It might have been a mistake to try taking up lifting approximately where i left off several months ago, but i'm determined to get my pudgy arse back in shape. i did leave the last set off of each workout. But i could definitely feel some muscle fibers missing from the climbworkout today. i look forward to being strong again, so that i don't get so torn down and sore. At this rate, i expect to be strong again in one week. So how's Dallas, and, um, Abilene, i think?

Manana
It starts tomorrow. Got $300 worth o' books, spiffy new computadora, a bolt o' slick new poindexter britches, a haircut, a shave, and even some new G2 gel pens. How could i be more ready? 8 hrs. per day, 5 days the week, for 2.25 years. If that don't make me feel like i'm worth my paycheck, then nothin' will.
i'm figuring the baby will come 'bout halfway through tomorrow sometime.
Didn't irongym me today; but i did go climbing. Good session all around. m' hands are frittered. Planned on lifting, but i don't think the nubbins would hold a heavy bar presently. i do plan to make it up tomorrow if i can sneak a workout in.
we'll see how it goes. Don't ease up on those prayers yet, bruthas.

Toxic shock in the proton ocean
i actually worked out yesterday in the irongym. Things were grim, as expected; but not as grim as expected. i kinda did the workout i've been doing before, only i stopped short on nearly everything so's not to be quite so broken and sore today. Still had to concentrate on not puking and driving in a straightish line on the way home. Seems i packed on some poison o'er the holidays.
we packed our bags for the hospital last night. Steph went to work today (for reasons i'm not altogether clear on), but i'm expecting the phone call. Don't know, of course, that it'll be today, but i surely wouldn't be surprised. i'm looking forward to meeting the new boy. Prayers please.
Oh, and Joshua and Amber had their baby this morning at 7:18. You should text him and say congrats.

Etwas Anders
Could have a baby tomorrow. Don't know that for sure, of course; only it seems very possible.
Interesting day, today. Did get to go climbing. Sent the first v5 i've done in a long time. Can't say it was solid 5, 'cuz i did it on m' 3rd try; but it was possible to imagine it might have been hard if i were a bigger wuss than i am. (First time i tried it i didn't expect to stick the last move, which was a long, off-balanced diagonal throw to the slopey lip; but i sorta stuck, swung out nearly horizontal to the ground at ceiling height, and popped. Screamed like a li'l girl on the way down.) Hooked up with a friend, and we put in a pretty gnarly workout today. Finished with some toproping. That's becoming a very fine addition to the session. Did an 11-, lowered, and climbed this 5.8, downclimbed it, climbed it, downclimbed, then climbed a third of the way back up before melting off. Then climbed a 10+, lowered, moved to a 9-, sent, started downclimbing, and melted a few moves above the start holds. Forearms were juiced. That's a good workout. i'd like to keep that trend going.
Just watched District 9. Rent that. One o' the coolest flicks i've seen in a very long while. i think i'll purchase that 'un.
Seriously though, Steph has been having mad contractions today. Naturally, el nino could tarry for another week or two; but it sure don't seem likely. For my part, i'm hoping for a good night of sleep 'fore he pops. Prayers, please, for full development and a healthy boy. It's looking to be a crazy week.

Wanna hear it...here it go
There is a climbing comp in Amarillo this sat. methinks i'll not be making it. Steph had her scheduled appt. with the midwife this morning, and she's "thinning" and 2 kilometers dilated. Now she's trying to squeeze 'til the 3rd, which'll be the 36 week mark. we'd all be happier if she was projecting till week 37, but it's looking sketchy. Anyhow, we could just have us a baby boy this weekend.
i got m' physical today for school. Happily, he forewent the rectal exam. That's neither here nor there, only it lifted my spirits.
i went climbing a couple o' days ago. Didn't go too badly for a fatboy. i'm back over 200lbs., but i still sent a slew of v3s and 4s. Think i'm gunna go climb today; might be the last chance i get for a while. Sorry to trouble you all again, but i'd appreciate the prayers for the babe--if he comes in the next few days he'll be pushing the development envelope. Staying a week or two in an nbicu again would be super stressful under the circumstances. There're certainly worse problems to have, i know; but that'd be neat if he comes out perfect and healthy and well. Peace.

Buen Dia
One o' those days, i guess:
Got m' grades all in from school, and got 3 As and 3 Bs. That means i'm really, truly, really, fer real in grad school.
Ordered a laptop. (Actually accomplished one thing toward getting to the first day of school).
Took Annie to the Kettergym with me, and she pulled down with some focus for once. This is a good sign. An' i sent a v6. Gunna hafta say it was more 5ish, but i haven't sent one of those either in a coon's age; so i'll take it. Sick li'l problem, whatever it was.
Replaced the fuel filter on the van yesterday, and a spark plug wire today--and it seems still to be running.
And we get a li'l vacation yourward tomorrow.
Now if Steph can jus' keep the youngest corked in 'til the 3rd...
Anyhow, feels more like Thanksgiving today. i like days like this. Thank You, God.

Thank You, God.

baby-steps to the refrigerator
Finally finished with finals! WooHoo! By the grace of God, i snagged a 95 on that last one. Pretty confident i did well enough in Micro. Already have my grades for Micro lab and A&P 1 lab. As long as i didn't endo on my A&P 1 lec final, or A&P 2 lab, i'm set. Now i just gotta buy a stethoscope and a K worth of books.
Climbed yesterday. i think it's slowly starting to come together again. Ended up making serious throws at a couple of v6s. They'll both fall soon. Amazing how much of a difference it makes to climb with some motivated, strong guys. Anyhow, i'm encouraged 'cuz i haven't lifted in nearly 3 months, and while i haven't really gained any weight, i know i've switched a lot of fat for muscle mass; so if i'm climbing like that knowing that i'm outta shape, it gives me a nice dose of hope for what'll happen when i get back into shape. i am suddenly highly motivated. Plus, the classmates and i will be doing physical exams on each other, and i think it'd be neato if my gut didn't curl up in my lap and wink at me whenever i sit down. This, too, is somewhat motivating.

Halfway
Three classes down; three to go. Unless i've seriously misjudged, i'm holding at least Bs in everything so far. Please continue praying. i'd really like three mo' Bs-or-better.
Climbed today for the third day in a row. Today was the first day in a week or so that i've felt sorta well. i'm still horking up axle grease, but it's less frequent now; and i can breathe a bit better today. Trend for the last week's been that i drop off a v3 and i'm sucking wind like an emphasemic rhinocerous. i did jack my shoulder up again--only i've done that so frequently now, it barely slows me down. Today was a pretty good day of it. Nothing super hard, but i got several 3s and 4s, and i felt a lot better than yesterday. i've been working on a short "v6" that i think'll go; only i'm gonna hafta heal a ring-finger crimpy tendon first. It involves hanging most of my fat arse off'n a crimp, and that finger mutinies against my authority each time; but it will fall into line sooner or later. i will stick the four foot dyno, i will finish the problem, and i will glory in the adulation of the masses. (Else, i'll smile and pump my fist a few times for the onlooking crickets.)
i'm very looking forward to this next week being over. i would so very much like to know i'm actually accepted to school, and that i can get on with concentrating on that; and i really, really want to get back into shape.

Recombobulation
Sunday, 8:30. i'm trying to meditate on the rhythmic blinking of the cursor. Tomorrow, 12 hrs. hence i start the interview. i've been sick all weekend, and i'm a tiddle nervous about whether i'll have a voice, or be coughing lung tissue, or'll just be snotting like a faucet as i've been today. i look very forward to being at about this point tomorrow evening; and mostly i look forward to being at this point tomorrow knowing i've been accepted. [Pause here to pray for a brutha'].
i climbed the last few days, in spite of being sick, 'cuz i didn't figure i'd get much of a chance with finals, etc., this coming week. Didn't amount to much, save a decent workout. i'm actually losing fitness here. haven't gained much weight, but i haven't lifted in nearly a month and a half--and i can definitely tell. i'm hoping things smoothe out after this next week. i have a feeling things'll emotionally smoothe out for me after tomorrow. [Again, pause here to pray for a brutha'].
i'll fa' shizzle let yas know if i'm a winner or a loser tomorrow evening. Peace. Inner peace. In-in-in-inner peace.
