YnY, Hangboard, Backwork, and Campus #1

Right then. Seems i didn't manage to get a goodly numma o' workouts posted. Been an odd coupla weeks here. Went to Flag for vacay (where i did at least go to a nice bouldering gym) and didn't get much in there. Looks like i tried to post up HB 4, but stalled out. Did, however get in HB 5 and 6. I want to post HB 6 for reference, but the rest are in the book.

Prior to going i got in a really good backwork sesh, and finally got 445 locked from a deficit. Really not too hard. Ended up getting a set of 6ish with 120 (i'm pretty sure) on DB rows. Again, could tell a reasonably sizable difference 'tween m' right arm strength and left, but no pain.

Monday (i think) i got in Campus #1 for the season. Used campus 1 from last season as a template, and honestly (and surprisingly) wasn't too far off the mark. Lost a little ground with a ruptured biceps and around 8 months off, but really only a little. That's very encouraging.

Tonight i went in for Limit boulder #1, but i mostly ended up routesetting.

Oh, and saturday was Yank n Yard. Felt off and kinda weak--like it was too early in the season (which it was)--but didn't do too badly, and pulled off some fun routes. Annie did amazingly (for training a collective 1 hours in the antecedent year) and pulled off a 3rd place. Can't help but wonder what she'd do if she trained.

Hangboard # 3 and 2 and backwork...in not that order

Guess i didn't manage to post HB 2 yet. That was on 9.22.16. Yesterday i did HB 3. Actually didn't go too poorly.

Today i did backwork at the gym. I might be paraplegic in the morning, but it was a good 'un.

Deads i did on the olympic platform, so no deficits. And the weights were mostly in kilos, so i'm not entirely sure what i was lifting. And i don't know what the collars weigh. But if i calculated right, I pulled a bit over 460 with the straps. Very weird using a prone grip and those straps, but nice not blowing a biceps.

Then GoodMornings. 135, 155 and 175 all x 12r.

Then P'lups. Got 20 x BW, 10 x +25, and 8 more x +25. That was an improvement.

Then DB rows. Kept these simple, 'cuz i hurt my right shoulder jumping over a stall last night, adn wasn't sure what would happen if i weighted it. Got a set of 10 x 90 each arm, and 10 x 100. Pretty pleased about that--puts me back in visual of where i left off. Left arm is definitely weaker than m' right, but not painful. Just gets tired easier.

Back to it (Season 6, finally)

Looks like i am posting almost exactly 6 months out from left distal biceps rupture/repair. Odd: it really feels longer than that. I'm now about 2 weeks into a 6th season of climb training. Actually started climbing 3-4 weeks out from surgery, but hadn't felt very confident about doing a formal season of it 'til recently. By the grace of GOD, i really haven't lost all that much strength, which just continues to surprise me. I mean, i really don't feel i've lost more than i would have if i'd just sat on the couch eating chips for 6 months, ruptured muscle notwithstanding. I guess my left arm probably feels a li'l weaker than the right, and i'm not 100% confident about redlining on that side yet, but i feel pretty good.

So two weeks ago i got in 2 ARC sessions: one of 2 x 25mins and then 2 x 35mins. Last week i got in 3 sessions (although the last one was lame 'cuz they closed the gym early.) Accidentally did 3 x 35 mins for the first workout instead of 30s, so that made for a nice hard one. then 2 x 30, and the third was supposed to be 2 x 25, but i just made 1 x 35 without enough time.

Last night i did Hangboard #1. Roughly based my weights on the first workout of last season (which was on Jan 26--so 8 months ago), but i had to drop the weights some.

WUJ: -15.

Large Open:
1:  +15:  Ugh. I think i got these, but hard.
2:  +20:  Failed at the end of the last 2r.

1:  -45:  Failed on the last 4 really. Kinda finished with a foot on the ground.
2:  -55:  No fail. really needed to warm up better for that. Not bad, but that was kinda pushing it.

1:  -40:  No fail. Ok. Went pretty conservative after the pockets above, but i'm glad.
2:  -30:  NO FAIL! But pretty burly though.

Overall, i was very pleased with how this went after the very long hiatus. Really not that far off of where i blew up.

Back Work this evening. I kinda did a deads workout last week to practice using the new Ironmind straps, but it wasn't much of a workout. Today... well, i'll feel this in the mornin'.

Right then: i feel like i need to update for future reference. Tomorrow i'll be one week s/p left distal biceps repair. Popped it pulling from the pins 8 days ago on 3/3/3 day with 515, It was, of course, my supinated hand. Note: learn to pull with an overhand grip. Stop being a wuss.

It looks like i really haven't had time to post in over a month. So i'll briefly recap: Back work was going fabulously, and i'd cranked out up to a couple of p'lups with 90#. Was doing rack pulls for deads on a 550 max, but that was a li'l light (much to my happy surprise) and i'd upped it to a 570 max and that was going swimmingly. Believe i got a set of at least 4 with 130 on DB Rows.

Pusher wise, i didn't manage to add much weight to my OH Press, but did crank out i think a set of 3 with 155, which was a definite uptick. And i got, i believe, a set of 4ish with 100s on DB Bench, which was a happy accident. Managed to conflate bench with rows, and couldn't remember where i'd left off. Was also cranking out about 3 sets of 20 x BW on Dips and 3 sets of 30 on SLR.

Climbing wise, i finished all but the last set of Campus workouts, and was making progress there, even though i'm heavier than last season.

i have to lose weight. That's pretty much all there is to it. i'm prolly looking at 9-10 months of rehab ahead, and (by the grace of God) i'm pretty peaceful about it. But if i don't lose weight, i'll rehab right back into the same situation.

Just finished 8 days in a row of being in the Passion Play. That was just a blessing. If Yeshua could bleed and hang and die to save a bunch of petty, myopic, self-serving creatures, with no justice at all to drive it-- just the opposite-- then i can put up with a weak arm for a while, and smile while i'm doing it. Not much has been demanded of me.

Campus #1 and Back Work (with a limity boulder thang tossed in)

Got in session numma one on Ye Olde Campus Boorde. Honestly it was disappointing. Hands felt frayed and worn out still. I think i did more damage with the last two hangboard workouts than i'd thought. But also i was looking through my campus workouts from almost exactly a year prior, and i weigh around 7 lbs more now. Weighed in at 207 clothed.

Of note, i am still hitting the irongym a coupla times per week, and that is also taking a toll. Lifting for power and very hard climbing just aren't terribly compatible, as it turns out.

Limit Boulder #1

Basically i worked a really hard problem for 5-8 burns. Actually, i doubt it was a really hard problem. I was just tired when i got there. But it did have a painful, crimpy crux at move three that qualifies it in my estimation. But hard to rate it, because i was really fatigued.

Also, i did get my mt bike fixed. Now i have only poor, hollow excuses for not getting out there.

Back and Hangboard #8

Got in for back work today, and it was a doozy. Actually didn't have a hard time limit today, so i got to tear it down.3/3/3 day on Deads. Prolly gunna pay for that in the morning. Tonight i did go out for a hangboard workout as well. Really not a good combo in one day. The muscles are different enough between lifting and hanging that it's not a straightforward conflict, but i was definitely feeling beaten up tonight. Not a good workout, but i don't think i irreversibly damaged anything.

Deads:
Normal warmup of Deficits with only 25# plates.

Took 5 days off between last workout and this one, and was still really worn down and i did something more evil than i thought to my right flexors. Can't quite tell what i damaged or how bad, but it definitely shewed its angry eyes and bared its teeth. Gonna call it for the season on hangboard. I'm apparently to that special point where i'm doing more damage than good. Still a very good season of it. I added actually a decent amount of weight to some key grips, and am around 7# heavier than last season, which amounts to some impressive strength gain. Now to drop the lard.

Chest n Abs

Got in another week's chest work. Still no real plan here. Just trying to fill in the pectus excavatum. Did switch it up a bit.

OH Press:

1 x 155. I'm pretty sure this is where i landed. i think it was 155. Felt like i pushed on this for two full minutes, but got 'er locked out. Kinda pleased to get that. Not too terribly far off of my PR. I think it helped to do these before bench.

DB Bench:
10 or 12 x 50. Honestly wasn't sure what i could push here.
8ish x 65
6 x 75ish
4 x 85. i think. I cannot actually remember my weights. But that's pretty close.

Dips:
2 x 15
1 x 12. Was very tired here.

Straight Leg Raise:

1 x 20. Had to fight for these. Still feeling that. These could do me some good if i stick with 'em.

That's it. I have trouble getting psyched about chest day. But i do have lots of room to improve.

Hangboard #7

Two to go. Definitely starting to feel it. Nothing seriously damaged so far, but i'm skirting the line methinks. Also, i'm wondering if instead of doing just the same set/rep scheme every time, if it wouldn't work better to taper into campusing. Say, fewer reps on the last set, but heavier. Head toward a 1RM. i might just try that for the last two workouts. Lighten the first set a smidge, then go really heavy aiming for 2 reps to fail.

Hangboard #6 & Back Work: 5/5/5 day

Looks like i'm posting a couple minutes late for Saturday. Friday 2/12/16 got in Hangboard #6. Three to go. Took four days off instead of three, because i was feeling pretty torn down. I think that was a good idea. Notwithstanding, it was largely a holding pattern with no striking gains. But that's ok. I did see some progress on a few grips, and have made some good gains from last season already. I'm just very thankful to not be injured. Definitely skirting the hairy edge of injury, especially on the two finger pocket.

WUJ: -15: check.

Large Open:
1: +35: Failed last two reps.
2: +45: Ended up up being a decrease. Failed last 2 reps. I do notice on this that i really hang my thumbs on the grip lower. Very cold out there this night.

F 3,4:
1: -25: Same. Failed last 3 reps at the end. Definitely feelin' some tendon stretch in the right forearm.
2: -15: Same. Really failed on last 3. Not bad...just tired.

SemiClosed:
1: -15: Untaped prior to this one. No Fail!! That's a huge improvement.

Tonight i got in for some chest and abs. And shoulders. I'm just super weak, but it was a good workout, and now i can hardly move.

Totally dead in the shoulders and arms now. Need to work on this more. I just have a really hard time getting motivated to work chest. And abs just hurt. But i need to. Anyway--pretty good workout.

Hangboard #5

So we're over halfway through hangboarding now. I'm actually kinda amped: put gains on several grips from the end of last season's already. AND i'm heavier than i was last season. So again, if i could drop a stone or so, i'd be climbing some hard stuff. I'm definitely gauging my workouts by the F3,4 pocket; and that has really been a point of gains from last season.

WUJ: -15.

Large Open:
1: +35: Same. Failed middle last 2 reps.
2: +50: 5# incr. Failed last 3. Hardhard.

F 3,4:
1: -25: 5# incr. NO FAIL! Woot!
2: -15: Also 5# incr. wow. good on the 1st 3r, then failed last 3.

1: -15: Same. Hard. Fail the last 3r.
2: -5: Same. Ugh. Last 4 were mighty hard.

1: +5: 5# incr. Stayed taped for this one 'cuz my r middle finger is delaminating. This was slippy, although the first 3 were fine.

Back Work

 Got to sneak in for a back day yesterday Querque. Really good workout. Kind of an old school iron gym, and i really dig it. Bunch of meatheads. Very little lycra. Clocked in at 201 first thing in the morning.

Deficit Deads:
21 x bar SL
12 x 145 SL
8 x 245 normal form
4-6 x 345 no belt
2 x 445 Belt for this one. Pretty easy. As such, i tried one with 495 (still from a deficit), and failed pretty quickly. But i did disencumber it of its moorings; just couldn't lock. It's coming though.

P'lups:
20 x BW
10 x +25
6 x +45
4 x +65 This was a very tidy increase
3 x +80 Again, nice bump. Can't say i locked that last rep clean.
2 x  +90 Ok, more like 1.5 than 2, but i did lock the first one fine.

DB Rows:

8 x 100 Really easy
6 x 110 Still clicked these pretty easily
4 x 120 These were not so easy. Growled for the last coupla reps. But that maxed their DBs, so i was happy.

Straight Arm Cable Pressdowns:
Several sets. Finally worked up to 10ish with around 100#. These were on an ancient cable machine, and i really liked it. No gimmicks. Curious to see if these will add anything to the Campus work.

Very happy workout, really. I was hoping to do Rack Pulls for Deads, but their power racks aren't terribly conducive to this, and i was racing the clock to get a workout in. So maybe next week. Also i didn't get Good Mornings in for a second week. But i was super psyched to get some weight up on Pullups, and with how easy 445 felt from the deficit pulls. Now to lose weight with some ferocity...

Hangboard #4

[This should've been published yesterday, 2/5/16, but i fell asleep before i hit the button. Just so's the date is accurate...ed]

I'll admit i had fairly low expectations for this. So i distantly exceeded them. Weighed in at 202 and change this morning, didn't sleep well, didn't feel entirely healed from Tuesday's session, and tipped 209 fully clothed before heading out. But the psych was there, and it was a good workout. Did do a pretty good warmup, but it was mighty chilly out there tonight. very blessed to have a heater.

WUJ: -15. check.

Large Open:
1: +35: 5# incr. Ugh! Failed on the last 3 reps really. Couldn't feel the board. Just frozen still.
2: +45: 5# incr. Better! Failed at the end of the last three.

Seeing increases here.Kinda hard to believe, 'cuz i'm fairly portly even compared with last season. So on most grips i've basically added weight even if i haven't added iron. Recurring theme: if i could slough 20ish lbs of lard, i'd be clmbing at a different level entirely.

Hangboard #3

Did HB#3 last night (2/2/16). After the first one last Tues night, freezing my butt off, and trying to hang from frozen paws, i was a hair reticent. But last night i was armed with a fresh tin of propane, and i took the time to do a proper warmup. Very different deal, and i actually made some progress, extra clothing and extra fat notwithstanding. Believe i weighed in at around 202 first thing in the am, and was a bit over 207 in clothing without a harness.

WUJ: -15. Check.

Large Open:
1:  +30: 5# incr. Fail last rep.
2:  +40: 5# incr. Huh. Hard. Not exactly a fail.

F3,4:
1: -35: 5# incr. This has me back where i left off last season, except NO FAIL! Woot!
2: -25: 5# incr. Again, back where i left off, except i failed last 3 secs last rep instead of the last 3 reps! This gives me hope for my tubby booty.

SemiClosed:
1: -20: 5# incr. Fail last 3 secs last rep. Not too bad.
2: -10: 5# incr. Pretty solid fail on the last 3r. Good 'til then.

1: +35: 10# incr. Meant to take this to 30# and threw a dime on 'stead of a nickel. Failed last 3, but it was a nice surprise to be heavier than i had in mind. This put me 10# up from last season!
2: +40: 5# incr. Huh. Fail last 2, totaled the last one. At any rate, more weight with less fail than last sesh, and i'm nearly back to last season's weight.

Narrow:
1: -65: Same. Fail last 3. Hard. but better.
2: -55: Same. Last 3, so also the same.

Super encouraging workout! Pretty much back to where i left off last season; and stronger on some grips (notably the 2 finger pocket). Now if i could figure out how to shed 20lbs...

Hangboard #2 and some back work

Saturday (would'a' been 1/30/16) did Hangboard numma two. Got to do this one in the daytime, so it was a lot more comfy. 'Fact, i turned the heater on, and it was too hot. Despite the pics of the hardcore sending v13 in the snow, i feel like i perform better when i can sense from what i'm trying to hang. Pretty good workout for a fat boy. Clocked in at over 201 first thing in the morning.

WUJ:  -15. Managed to hang the weight this time.

Large Open:
1:  +25. Ok.
2:  +35: If i were honest, i prolly popped last 1/10 sec last rep. Hard.

F3,4:
1:  -40. Got it! Very hard.
2:  -30. failed last 2-3 secs last two reps. Not too bad!

SemiClosed:
1:  -25: Decreased from last time by 5# and send. Hard last rep.
2:  -15:  Increase by 5# from last round. got most of the 5th, then a massive fail on last rep. >-)

F2,3,4:
1:  BW:  Increase by >10lbs. 1st 3 were fine, but then i was slipping on my tape. Gotta untape.
2:  BW:  Untaped for this one. Failed halfway through the last 2. Way better.

Wide:
1:  -40:  5# increase. Failed last two. Nice. Hard.
2:  -30:  'Nother 5# increase. Failed last two, with total fail on the last one.

Slopey:
1:  +25: Fail on last 3. Ugh.
2:  +35:  Last 3. Hard. But not too far off.

1:  -65: Failed last 4 i think.
2:  -55:  Failed last 3. Odd.

Good one. Not too far off of where i left off last season, and i'm quite a lot heavier now.

After this i went to town and hit the gym for a very quick one. Got in Deficit Deads and Pullups. No time for anything else.

3 x +65. Really didn't lock the 3rd one completely. That's the first time i've gone up on weight in a long time. Kinda' excited to start pulling some heavy weight again, and see if it crosses into campusing.

Happy workout for only fitting in two exercises.

Hangboard #1 etc.

So this last saturday and sunday i did the AMGA climbing wall instructor cert. Good times. Should prove profitable for starting a club/team.

Saturday i did manage to squeeze in deadlifts, and--Lo!-- i locked 445 from a deficit! Super amped about that.

Tuesday i did Hangboard #1 for season 5. It was miserably cold, and that seriously detracted from the quality. Very weird sensation hanging when yer fingers feel like they're made of wood. I roughly followed #6 from the last season, and that sorta worked out. Main theme: i needed to warm up better. My hands stayed frozen 'til i was nearly to the pinches! Also my timer didn't beep, so that was disconcerting. Yeah: several kinks to work out.

WUJ: BW. a certain small girl adjusted the cord on my weight pin, so i didn't get the weight off the ground for this one.

Large Open: (f2 to 1st dimple)
1:  +25:  Got it. Numb.
2:  +35:  Missed the last 2.

F 3,4: (Shallow)
1:  -40:  Got it! Last second....
2:  -35:  Failed last two. Again, miserably cold.

SemiClosed: (f3 to outside dimple)
1:  -20:  Failed last 3. Totally couldn't feel my 4th fingers at all.
2:  -20:  Didn't move the weight here. Couldn't feel a thing. failed last two reps.

1:  -10: Faled last second last rep.
2:  -5:  Yeah. got it. 'Bout warmed up here.

Wide:
1:  -45:  Failed last rep.
2:  -35:  Failed last rep. better here. Warmer.

Season 5 ARCing

So. Tonight i finished up ARCing. Basically. Monday i did 3 x 30mins; then Tues i did 3 x 25mins. Today (after a day off cuz my hands felt like ground meat) i did a 30min sesh. S'posed to be two, but i really felt like bouldering a bit and being home.

very encouraging. I weighed in a few ounces over two hundo this morning, so i'm too fat. But i climbed like a hoss tonight. With one day of rest, 30mins of climbing at a good clip went by really easily. So now i can start hangboarding.

Saturday is Climbing Wall Instructor cert. Looking really forward to that. And i'm looking forward to hangboarding. I'm really REALLY looking forward to starting a climbing team.

Back Work

Yesterday i got off work early ('cuz i had to work today), so i went in for some back thrashin'. And it was good.

Did Deficit Deads, and got 445 up to the bottom of my patellae, but couldn't muster the wherewithal to lock. This convinced me i should work on pin lockouts again. Be mighty nice to see the numbers climb.

Then did Good Mornings. That was just fine.

Then did P'lups. That went particularly well, and i worked up to (i believe) a set of 5 with +55 and a set of 3 or 4 with +65. That was satisfying.

Then did DB Rows and worked up to a set of 5 with 115. That was kinda nice too.

Then i did Face Pulls with some weight.

Then did Straight Arm Pressdowns. I kinda like these, and look forward to seeing how they translate to Campusing.

Catch up to Season 5

That's a li'l hard to believe: i haven't written for almost two months. On the bright side, i have been working out. Looks like i'm on to season 5; but first the catchup.

Shortly after that last post i did string four routes together pretty tidily. Then went into just trying to send some hard routes. All on plastic. Never made it outside. Kept climbing for the next month, then called it about a week and a half before Christmas in order to get a two week rest to start a new season. Also tried to get back into the irongym about that time.

First session of deadlifting i sproinged my back. Was largely outta commission for the next week or two. have recovered, and've been hitting it pretty regularly. I can almost do the deficit warmup. Went in last saturday and missed 445 a couple o times. Soon though.

Also have started back with Good mornings, weighted p'lups, DB rows and face pulls. got a coupla sets of about 6 with +45 on p'lups and did a set of 6 (i think) with 110 on DB rows. Not a bad sesh.

This week i've started back into enduro climbing. Monday i did a bench workout in the barn. Got a single with 210. That's sad, but i can live with it. Tues i did the first sesh of ARCing at 2 sets of 30mins. Today (thurs) did 2 sets of 35mins. Did take a fall 'cuz a foothold spun on me, but that was it. Very difficult wall right now. But i'm also just outta shape for enduro.

Did weigh in at 199 this morning. That's better. Got up to about 207 whilst in tx over the holiday. So there's a smidge o progress.
